How to Install PVC Ceiling Panels in Your Bathroom

PVC ceiling panels solve all of these problems permanently, and fitting them is a straightforward DIY job that most homeowners complete in half a day.

Choosing Your Fixing Method
Direct Adhesive
Apply panel adhesive directly to the back of each panel and press to the existing ceiling. Fastest method, works well on flat plastered or painted ceilings.
Batten Framework
Fix 25×50mm timber battens to the ceiling joists at 400–600mm centres, then clip or adhesive panels to the battens. Better for uneven ceilings, artex, or where you want to conceal pipework or install downlights.
Step-by-Step
Step 1 — Plan Your Layout
Measure the ceiling. Decide which direction to run panels — typically parallel to the longest wall, or matching your wall panels. Calculate how many you need plus 10% for waste. Plan for equal-width cut panels on both sides rather than one full and one narrow strip.
Step 2 — Prepare the Ceiling
Clean the surface, remove loose paint or flaking plaster, fill significant cracks. If battening, locate joists with a stud finder and fix battens perpendicular to them.
Step 3 — Fix the First Panel
Start in a corner. Apply adhesive in a zigzag pattern or clip into the first batten. Press firmly and hold for 30–60 seconds. Check straight with a spirit level or chalk line.
Step 4 — Continue Across
Each subsequent panel clips into the tongue-and-groove of the previous one. Apply adhesive, engage the groove, press flat. Work across in rows.
Step 5 — Cut Around Lights
Mark light positions on the panel face using a template. Cut circles with a hole saw, rectangles with a jigsaw. Always cut slightly undersized and test-fit first.
Step 6 — Fit Perimeter Trim
Run coving trim or L-shaped ceiling trim around the perimeter to cover the gap between the last panel row and the wall. Fix with panel adhesive. Mitre corners at 45°. Seal the top edge with a thin bead of silicone.

Can I install downlights in panel ceilings?
Yes. Use IP65-rated downlights. Use the batten method and cut holes as you go. Wiring must be done by a qualified electrician.
Do ceiling panels need ventilation?
Leave small gaps at the perimeter when battening. Panelling directly over a plastered ceiling doesn't require this.
