SPC vs PVC Bathroom Panels: Which Is Better?

SPC vs PVC Bathroom Panels: Which Is Better?

When shopping for bathroom wall panels you'll encounter two material types: PVC and SPC. Both are waterproof, both work in bathrooms — but they're not identical.

What Is PVC?

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) panels have a hollow or foamed core with a printed decorative layer. Lightweight, flexible, easy to cut, and cost-effective. The flexibility makes installation forgiving on slightly uneven surfaces.

What Is SPC?

SPC (stone-plastic composite) has a denser core made from limestone powder, PVC, and stabilisers. The result is a rigid board that feels substantially heavier and more solid than standard PVC — similar to SPC luxury vinyl flooring technology, applied to walls.

Head-to-Head Comparison

Factor PVC SPC
Weight Lightweight — easy solo install Heavier — may need two people
Rigidity Flexible — forgives uneven walls Very rigid — needs flat substrate
Impact resistance Good Excellent
Waterproofing 100% 100%
Sound insulation Moderate Better
Cost Lower Typically 20–40% more
Finish quality Good Premium — more realistic texture

When to Choose PVC

  • Working to a budget and want maximum m² for your money
  • Fitting solo — the lighter weight is much easier to manage
  • Fitting over existing tiles that aren't perfectly flat
  • Panelling a large area (ceiling, multiple rooms)

When to Choose SPC

  • You want a premium finish that feels solid and high-quality
  • High-traffic bathroom (family, guest en suite)
  • You want more realistic stone, marble, or wood texture
  • Sound or thermal insulation matters
  • Investing in a long-term renovation

Can You Mix PVC and SPC?

Generally not recommended — the thickness difference means joins won't sit flush. If mixing areas, use H-join trims to bridge the transition.

FAQs

Is SPC the same as rigid core LVT?

Very similar in composition. SPC wall panels use the same stone-plastic composite core technology as SPC luxury vinyl tile flooring.

Do SPC panels need different adhesive?

The same solvent-free panel adhesive works for both. SPC is heavier, so ensure good coverage when adhering.
